Your Facebook ads are live. The budget is going out the door. But the sales just aren't showing up. Sound familiar? If so, there's a good chance one, or more, of the five mistakes below is quietly eating your spend. The good news: every one of them is fixable, and most are simple to correct once you know what to look for.
Mistake #1: Targeting that's too broad, or too narrow
This is the most common budget killer, and it cuts both ways.
Go too broad, "all women in Indonesia, ages 18 to 65", and your CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions) looks cheap, but your conversion rate stays on the floor. You're paying to reach a lot of people who were never going to buy.
Go too narrow, an audience of just 1,000 to 5,000 people, and the opposite happens. Facebook shows the same ad to the same people over and over, your frequency spikes, your costs climb, and you start getting your ad hidden or reported.
The fix for a local SMB: target by city or a 20-50km radius, choose an age range that actually matches your buyers, and layer in 2-3 relevant interests. Aim for an ideal audience size of roughly 50,000 to 500,000 people. That's wide enough for Facebook's algorithm to optimize, and tight enough to stay relevant.
Mistake #2: Choosing the wrong campaign objective
Facebook optimizes for exactly what you ask for, no more, no less. If you pick Post Engagement or Reach when what you really want is sales, the algorithm will dutifully go find people who love to like and comment. Not people who buy. That's why so many advertisers end up with a wall of likes and an empty order book.
Match the objective to the outcome you actually want:
- WhatsApp chats: use Messages or Engagement.
- Website visits: use Traffic.
- Purchases (with the Pixel installed): use Conversions or Sales.
- Prospect data / lead collection: use Leads.
Getting this one setting right often does more for your results than any change to your creative.
Mistake #3: Creative that doesn't stop the scroll
Your ad isn't competing with other ads. It's competing with your customer's friends, family, and favourite creators in the feed. If it doesn't earn attention in the first second, it never gets the chance to sell anything.
Here's how to tell your creative is the problem:
- CTR (click-through rate) below 0.5%
- CPC (cost per click) above Rp5.000
- High frequency but almost no clicks, people are seeing it and scrolling right past
The fix: lead with a high-quality photo or video, write a headline that names the exact problem your customer feels, and always test 2-3 creative variations against each other. Let the data tell you which one wins instead of guessing.
Mistake #4: Impatience, editing your ads too often
Every new Facebook campaign goes through a learning phase, roughly the first 7 days or 50 conversions, while the algorithm figures out who to show your ad to. During that window it's still calibrating, so early results are noisy and not yet reliable.
The trap is tinkering. Every time you make a significant change, your budget, your targeting, your creative, you can reset the learning phase and send the algorithm back to square one. Do that repeatedly and your campaign never stabilizes, so it never gets efficient.
The fix: once a campaign is live, leave it alone for 7 days without significant changes. Give the algorithm the room it needs to learn, then judge the results.
Mistake #5: Flying blind, not measuring what matters
Plenty of advertisers only ever look at Reach and Impressions. Those are vanity metrics. They tell you how many people saw the ad, not whether the ad made you any money. The number that actually matters is Cost Per Result, what it costs you to earn one chat, one lead, or one sale.
The fix, build a simple measurement setup:
- Install the Meta Pixel on your site.
- Set up custom conversions that match your real goal (for example, a WhatsApp click counts as 1 conversion).
- Review the metrics that matter every week: Cost Per Result, CTR, and ROAS (return on ad spend).
- Add UTM tags to your links so you can trace results in Google Analytics.
When you can see Cost Per Result next to the value of a sale, every budget decision gets easier, and far less expensive.
Your pre-launch checklist
Before you push a single ad live, run through this quick list:
- The campaign objective matches the result you actually want.
- Your audience sits in the 50,000-500,000 range.
- You have 2-3 creative variations ready to test.
- The Meta Pixel is installed and firing.
- Your budget is set to run consistently for 7 days.
- You've scheduled a weekly review.
None of these five mistakes is exotic, and that's exactly why they're so costly, they hide in plain sight. Avoid them and you'll get more from every rupiah you spend, without touching your budget.
